The 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methylpiperazine used as a starting material was prepared as follows: A mixture of 2-bromoethanol (2.36 g), N-methylpiperazine (1.26 g), potassium carbonate (5.0 g) and ethanol (150 ml) was stirred and heated to reflux for 18 hours. The mixture was cooled to ambient temperature and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated and the residue was triturated under a mixture of methylene chloride and acetone.
