A mixture of 4-bromo-l,2-difluorobenzene (1 g, 5.18 mmol), (S)-tert-buty 2- methylpiperazine-l-carboxylate (1.04 g, 5.18 mmol), t-BuONa (747 mg, 7.77 mmol), BINAP (40 mg, 0.06 mmol) and Pd2(dba)3 (20 mg, 0.02 mmol) in toluene (15 mL) was stirred at 80C for 3 hrs. The mixture was then purified by chromatography (silica, EtOAc/PE = 1/8) to afford {S)-tert- butyl-4-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-2-methylpiperazine-l-carboxylate (921 mg, 2.95 mmol, 57%) as product.
